On the evening on March 31st, Rachel lost the fight; our daughter is with Jesus. We are at peace and deeply grateful for your prayer on our behalf as we stand convinced of God’s goodness.
As we shared in our last update, our daughter Rachel had been seriously ill with an accumulation of fluid in her lungs. But we had begun to see a marked improvement and felt like we had turned the corner. Then an infection of some kind attacked her body and she did not have the strength to fight it.
It has been a challenging time filled with memories and emotions, but we have also felt some of the deepest peace we have ever experienced. On Saturday, April 6th we held a celebration of her life surrounded by people we love. It was really incredible and we enjoyed having so many family and friends together to honor her life. If you want, you could watch the memorial on the Dayspring YouTube Channel to get a taste of the celebration.
Yesterday we had the privilege of meeting with the students and professors at the Missouri University accounting school where Rachel taught. They put on a reception in her honor and represented her well. Several of the faculty shared their memories and then some of her students talked about Rachel’s affect on their lives. It was fun to get a glimpse into the influence she had on her work family. The dean announced that the University with the help of Price Waterhouse, the first firm where Rachel worked, is creating a permanent scholarship endowment in her honor.
At the end the head of department asked us to share about some of the other facets of Rachel’s life. We were well received and in the conversations after the meeting there were many good questions being asked. We know the seeds of faith she planted in the school will grow and produce fruit.
We are convinced that both Sally and I are to go to South Africa next week as planned and take a toll. We know without a doubt that what the enemy meant for evil will be turned for the greater progress of the Gospel. We have a team with us for the first two weeks as we minister in Nelspruit and Secunda. Then Sally and I will be traveling for an additional 4 weeks. You can follow us on steveandsally.org.
We value your prayer as we travel, we know this will be a time of healing for us, but we are asking for an even greater demonstration of God’s presence and power.
